Rough Day Ahead

Tomorrow, the 13th, will be a doubly hard day for my emotions this year.

First, I am dealing with the first anniversary of the death of my best friend, Michael. He had a long, drawn out battle with something last year from December 2, 2003 until his final defeat on January 13, 2004. It's hard because we will never know exactly what happened since no autopsy was done. The doctors didn't want to do one on their own (I guess they were afraid that it might show negligence on their part) and Michael's brother didn't want one because it would cost money, and I couldn't order one since I am not a relative, I was just the name on Michael's Living Will to give the final order to end his suffering.

Second, my brother-in-law's sister-in-law (my sister's husband's brother's wife) died suddenly on Saturday and her Memorial/Burial is tomorrow also.

So I am having to deal with the death of two people who were close to me on the same day. Death, on the same day, two years in a row. Who's next year's casualty? Is this my torture from now on? Mental/Emotional instead of physical?

I was planning a quite reflective day tomorrow but now I have to be selfless instead of selfish and go share my grief. It's gonna be hard holding my personal emotions about Michael back while trying to comfort my
brother-in-law's family.

They say it gets easier after the first year, but I doubt it really will ever get easier. My brother-in-law has already gone through this with the loss of his brother a few years ago, and he agrees that it doesn't get easier with time. Holidays and special events continue to remind you of the person you lost....years after they're gone.

Michael was my best friend.

I have only ever had one other best friend, Matt from high school, and although he's alive and well, working for Disney as a chef at Disney World, I haven't really seen him in the many years since he moved away after high school. I met Michael at work and we shared interests and became fast friends.

He was my brother for all intents and purposes.

I miss him greatly.
